PARENTAGE OF THE ELUSIVE HENRY BATEMAN.

At this stage the origins of Henry Bateman is unclear.  On his marriage certificate, he states that his parents were Edward BATEMAN, coal miner and Maria WILLIAMS and his birthplace was Flintshire Scotland.
On the birth certificates of his children he states Flintshire North Wales, Flintshire Wales and Flintshire England.

We have not been able to find a marriage record for Edward BATEMAN and Maria WILLIAMS,  however on 7 July 1828 in Halkyn Parish, a Maria/Mariah BATEMAN bapt 13 Sept 1806 (daughter of James BATEMAN, miner and Catherine LLOYD) married Edward WILLIAMS (son of John WILLIAMS, collier and Jane BELLIS) of Holywell around the same time.
This couple had at least 4 children, and the following is recorded in Halkyn parish registers:
Enoch WILLIAMS baptised 21 Dec 1828 abode Lletty'r Eos
Emma WILLIAMS bapt 12 Dec 1830, Smelter of Bagillt, Holywell
Louisa WILLIAMS bapt 12 May 1833 Smelter of Bagillt, Holywell
James WILLIAMS bapt 19 July 1835 at Smelter of Bagillt, Holywell.

On the 1841 census, Maria had returned to her family in Halkyn and using her maiden name. No mention of Henry or her other children.  We assume that Edward WILLIAMS may have passed away.

Henry did fairly well in the Castlemaine Gold field area, occupations listed as miner and farmer. (Some family members say that he was a miner manager and mine engineer). He died on 26 August 1912 in Carlton, Victoria Australia. On 26 May 1860 at Christ Church Castlemaine Victoria married Mary COOK born 1839 at Risca Monmouthshire Wales, daughter of John COOK (1815 -1899) and Mercy JAMES (1813-1902) Mary died on 12 April 1913 at Brunswick Victoria.
