Family Memories

Margaret milked the cows and do the separating while Vic was up at the Murray River burning Charcoal.

Barker Avenue had a chicken hatchery, had all these chook sheds and incubator. Also there was 2 more blocks of chicken sheds behind the Barker Avenue block.

 The girls had to the work inside and outside, however the boys didn't have do any work in the house.

Vic's truck was taken for the war effort.

Family Memories

Mert was a beautiful lady who entered into an arranged marriage at age 18 with Hector CURRIE, 11 years her senior. Hector had a twin, who, from family accounts was quite a nice man, unfortunately Hector was not a very pleasant husband and after several years Hector had left.
Sometime between 1927 and 1932, William DUNLOP (who had immigrated from Glasgow Scotland) came to work as a labourer on the Currie's farm.  Mert and William fell in love and planned to marry. In 1932 Mert gave birth to their little girl.  Sadly William died just a month or two after his daughter was born. Mert corresponded with William's family in Glasgow long after his death, exchanging letters and photos.

Mert was a very generous woman and after her sister-in-law Thelma died, Mert took in 2 of the children, their father Phil (Mert's brother) had sold the home and went looking for work. Money was tight and Mert used to let out the front unit at her home for a bit of money. Phil's children also stayed with their Aunty Carrie and Aunty Ivy at different times.
Mert was a very tough lady and her siblings often depended on her in times of need. It appears that Mert was a shoulder to cry on when partners had died or left and helped care for her nephews and nieces during family crisises.
