Picture to Right Caravan Bliss Philip Ford says he would not move from his caravan even if he won Tattslotto
Philip Ford says he has everything he needs. The 83-year-old lives in a small caravan at Shepparton's Victoria Lake Caravan Park where he tends to his vegetable patch. When he isn't at work in his garden, Philip sits outside his small van and enjoys a beer. He chats with passers-by and enjoys the company of his two budgies. "I love the lifestyle," Philip said. " I come and go when I like. I spend a lot of time out in the sun, listening to the wireless. Even if I won Tattslotto I wouldn't shift. I bought the van for $1000 and carted it from Melbourne. It costs me $26:50 a week to live here. I buy a lot of my meals. The only draw back is I have to use the shower block. The small space suits me. There is no hard work or much housework inside". |

Philip was born in Shepparton during the 1915 drought and was on the team which built the city's sewerage system manholes. His working career also included managing a chaff cutter at Yabba North, Four years in the army at Caulfield, and managing flats at Thornbury. He became a widower in 1950 when the youngest of his three children was 15-months-old. One of his children is now deceased and is buried at Katandra with Philip's wife, parents, and grandparents. "They call it Fords Corner" Philip said. "I try to visit them as much as I can" Philip has a daughter in Kyabram and a son in Kilsyth.
